RCS Business Messaging in India: Carriers, Providers & How to Get Started (2026)

RCS Business Messaging in India Carriers Providers How to Get Started

RCS Business Messaging is an upgrade from standard SMS to new, interactive forms of brand messaging such as carousels, sender verification badges, suggested replies, and others, all available within the native messaging application of users. If you have not used RCS Business Messaging in India before, check out our guide to RCS messaging for useful information about its functioning and main features.

This blog answers the questions that may be confusing you about the whole deal. Does it work on the carriers your customers use, does it work on their phones, who’s worth buying it from, what it costs, and how long compliance takes before your first message goes out. Here’s a simple guide to all your doubts.

Availability of RCS in India

RCS for business is now live in India. The three big operators now provide RCS service for their customers.

  • Jio initiated RCS in India. It built its own Message-as-a-Platform (MaaP) infrastructure instead of leaning on a third party for the backend, and it’s also behind India’s first Apple tie-up. Jio struck a partnership with Apple to bring RCS to iPhones on its network, reportedly the first telecom deal of its kind Apple has done anywhere in the country.
  • Vi got there early too. It rolled out Rich Business Messaging on Google’s RCS framework paired with Dotgo’s MaaP platform, which gave it a working enterprise channel well before its bigger rival showed up.
  • Airtel was the last major operator to adopt RCS. For a long time, Airtel wouldn’t switch on RCS through Google, arguing that encrypted RCS traffic could let spam slip past its existing filters. It even lobbied the regulator to bring OTT messaging platforms under formal anti-spam rules. That standoff ended in 2026, when Google agreed to plug RCS traffic into Airtel’s AI-driven spam filter, with Airtel reportedly charging around ₹0.11 per message. With Airtel finally in, all three private operators now support RCS, which means CPaaS providers can, for the first time, actually promise close to full network coverage.
  • BSNL is the one still lagging. Basic person-to-person RCS works fine through the default Android app, but enterprise-grade business messaging on BSNL isn’t running at any real scale yet.

RCS business messaging in India has now stopped being a “coming soon” story somewhere in 2026. It is live on Jio, Airtel, and Vi, and the usage data backs it up.

Will RCS Actually Reach Your Customers Phones?

Carrier support only gets you halfway. The message still has to land on a device that can render it, and this is the part most vendor pitches quietly skip.

On Android, this isn’t even a caveat, it is the whole market. Android runs on roughly 94% of Indian smartphones, and RCS ships switched on by default through Google Messages on almost all of them. If you’re building for India, Android is definitely your addressable audience.

In late 2024, Apple provided RCS support worldwide with the arrival of iOS 18, having previously avoided this for years. The implementation, however, is being carried out on a carrier basis instead of a universal basis despite the existence of an official list maintained by Apple that shows what RCS options are available across the various carriers.  However, the RCS business messaging in India is limited to texting services available through iPhones and the Jio deal, meaning Apple still does not have universal coverage in this country. If your clients comprise mostly of Airtel or Vi buyers, do not assume that they can enjoy RCS the same way the Android users do. Build your fallback-to-SMS logic accordingly and treat “iPhone support” as a Jio-specific claim rather than a market-wide one until other operators confirm equivalent deals.

Provider Landscape

Once carrier and device reach are settled, the real question is who gets your business live on the channel. RCS business messaging providers market split roughly three ways: global CPaaS companies with deep carrier relationships, India-headquartered CPaaS firms that grew up on the DLT and SMS compliance grind, and full-stack platforms like Bonvoice that bundle RCS in with voice, WhatsApp and SMS instead of selling it as a standalone product.

According to independent analytics, India is one of the fastest-developing RCS markets by 2026, with a major percentage of its messages coming from financial and fintech companies.

Provider type
Who’s in it?
Where does it make sense?
Global CPaaS
Infobip, Sinch
Good fit for multinationals running RCS across many countries under one contract, where India is one market among several.
India-origin CPaaS
Tanla, Route Mobile, Gupshup
Built around Indian carrier MaaP infrastructure and the DLT workflow specifically; strong at very high message volumes.
Full-stack CX platform
Bonvoice
Makes sense when you want RCS running alongside the rest of your customer communication (voice, IVR, WhatsApp, SMS fallback, CRM) through one API and one compliance team, instead of bolting a separate RCS-only vendor onto everything else.

Pure-play RCS specialists can squeeze out marginally deeper carrier integrations at an extreme scale. Most mid-market and enterprise brands don’t actually need that. What they need is RCS working reliably next to the SMS, voice, and WhatsApp channels they already run, with one dashboard for delivery data and one team handling DLT and sender verification across the lot. That’s the gap a platform like Bonvoice is built to close.

RCS Pricing in India

Choosing the right RCS business messaging service provider is important for managing delivery, compliance, and SMS fallback. There are certain points to be kept in mind while searching for the price range. Pricing moves with message type, media richness, and whether you’re billed per message or per 24-hour conversation. The clearest figure on record right now is Airtel’s disclosed rate under its 2026 Google agreement: roughly ₹0.11 per basic RCS message.

Everything else scales off that in a fairly predictable direction:

  • Plain text RCS lands close to a standard SMS rate.
  • Rich media like carousels, images, and buttons, typically run 20–30% above the basic rate, since it carries more payload and drives more engagement.
  • Session-based (conversational) RCS flips the model entirely. Instead of paying per message, you pay one flat rate for a 24-hour window of unlimited back-and-forth. That flat rate usually sits around double a basic message but works far cheaper per interaction than billing each reply separately.

TRAI/DLT Compliance & Verified Sender Approval

This is the step that actually determines your launch date, and it runs in two parallel tracks.

Track 1: DLT Registration

Under TRAI’s TCCCPR, 2018, businesses sending commercial communications in India, including RCS, must register as a Principal Entity, register a sender header, and get message templates approved. These are typically processed sequentially and can take approximately 1 to 2 weeks, assuming documentation is complete, with some additional time for KYC syncing.

Track 2: RCS Agent Verification

RCS requires a separate verification process. Google’s RCS Business Messaging process involves brand verification followed by carrier-by-carrier launch approval. Google does not specify a fixed timeline, but industry experience suggests this can take several weeks, especially for first-time agents or regulated sectors such as BFSI (Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance).

So, an estimated timeline to launch is closer to 4 to 6 weeks for most businesses. Working with a provider that already holds live, verified agent relationships across Jio, Airtel, and Vi compresses this considerably, since you’re already on an infrastructure that’s already cleared carrier review rather than starting a fresh application from zero.

Challenges of Deploying RCS in India

  • Carrier differences: Airtel joined RCS in 2026, and delivery, spam filtering, and feature parity can still vary across Jio, Airtel, and Vi. Test campaigns across all three before scaling.
  • Delay in verification: When it comes to regulated industries like banking and finance and healthcare, a stricter validation process must be followed. Therefore, make sure to allow some extra time in your launch plan and confirm the timelines with your provider.
  • Regulatory uncertainty: The guideline issued by the DoT regarding linking SIM with messaging services may affect users who change their SIM cards, have dual SIM/eSIM, or use web messenger. Since the rules are still evolving, make sure to partner with a provider who keeps updated with the changes in rules from TRAI and DoT.
  • Fallback costs: Messages that cannot be delivered via RCS can fall back to billable SMS. Check the RCS reach and segment your audience first in order to avoid unexpected costs eating into ROI.

So How Do You Actually Get Started?

Start by finding a reliable RCS service provider. This is the piece that determines everything downstream, since your provider is who handles registration and gets your brand a verified status with carriers and Google. From there, get clarity into your message templates early. Next, connect your RCS API to your existing CRM; this is what keeps everything centralised instead of RCS running as a disconnected side-channel. Last, evaluate expected volume against the value it’s likely to generate, so you’re calculating real ROI rather than guessing it.
